Introduction to CUN Scientific Research
The Central University of Nationalities (CUN) is the top institution
of higher learning specifically set up for ethnic minorities in
China. It is also one of top universities that have received special
funding provided by the central government in the name of Project
211. Since Chinese government carried out the open-up and reform
policy, the scientific research at CUN has persistently been oriented
to national economic construction, to helping development of ethnic
regions, and to promotion of material and ethical civilization.
CUN has markedly upgraded its research level and made tremendous
achievements.
I. Research Staff
CUN owns a strong research body, which, since its formation, has
been characterized in three aspects: 1. broadest ethnic representation,
as it is formed by outstanding researchers from over 40 ethnic groups,
including Han, Mongolian, Uygur, Tibetan, Zhuang, Hui, Manchu, Miao,

II. Research Institutions
With the ratification of State Commission of Ethnic Affairs, CUN
set up some important institutes, like Institute of Ethnology and
Anthropology, Institute of Ethnic Theory Studies and Policy on Ethnic
Affairs, Institute of Ethnic Languages and Literature, Institute
of Ethnic Economy, Institute of Ethnic Religions and Institute of
Tibetology, which are staffed by experts and professors well-known
both at home and abroad in the research field of ethnic classification,

III. Research Projects
By combining the requirements of research tasks and characteristic
features of the different periods at different historical stages
with the ethnic relationships and ethnic features at home and abroad,
researchers at CUN have fully exerted their strength, which lies
in their convenient access to the resources of a group of ethnic
disciplines on ethnic studies, and have produced a lot of original
academic monographs, translations, research papers and reports of
findings, which are of high value in both academics and application
and have laid a solid foundation for the development of ethnic disciplines……>>More
IV. Research Expenditure and Achievements
Since 1978, the number of research projects and achievements that
CUN has got has been on the rise, which can be reflected by the
increase of both expenditure and achievements during the period
of the Seventh Five-year Plan and Eighth Five-year Plan. The CUN
research expenditure in 1995 was 75% more than that in 1987. The
number of research projects increased 60 % in the Seventh Five-year
Plan period and 48.5 % in the Eighth Five-year Plan period on the
basis of the Seventh period, and achievements were fruitful ……>>More
